Where is a good place to pick up CV Joint Bolts for my 72 bus? I have no idea how they secured the originals? They seem entirely round (inside and outside).
Thanks.

Hey Phil. They are a 12 point allen head style bolt. You need one of these.

I've got one if you need it.

That type of socket head bolt is called a triple square.

pretty sure jeremy posted a link to the correct tool for the mounting bolts. but if the op's bolts are rounded/stripped it may or may not work for disassembly. plus i think the op is looking to replace the hardware anyways...
call avr, they'll be able to help you out (with the correct replacement bolts & tools for repairs).

Some early ones did have an internal hex or allen style bolt, clean yours up really good with brake claener and a dental pick. as for securing them they use special serrated washers and link plates between each 2 bolts, miss those and you'll be retorquing weekly. #'s 23, 24 & 11 here:

Phil, chime in will ya.

I've got it too and a bunch of spare bolts if you strip yours. I have used vice grips before when I stripped the inside.

My set up is as shown in the diagram (I have 11, 23 and 24) and I am continually tightening them with vice grips. I have cleaned a few and they do seem to be round, but I will give them another good cleaning tonight to double check.
Jeremy, maybe we can arrange a time that I could swing by and check out if the tool you have will work.
Thanks.

Is there a balance issue on the back end that is vibrating the hell out of the cv shaft? that seems odd...... maybe try a little blue loctite on some clean threads?
-
Phil,
I'll leave it in the mail box. Come get it whenever you want. You remember where I live? Knock and say hi if it looks like someone is home.

You'll need to get them cleaned up or replace them, Vanagon's use 36 foot lbs torque even though it's the same part as the bus, apparently VW thought tighter was better later on. Rather difficult to use locktite there as the grease from the CV is all over the threads no matter how careful you are, some have drilled the heads and used lock wire but good parts properly torqued don't need it.
