Odd Split Case #
« on: May 20, 2007, 09:53:00 PM »
I have a split case with an odd number stamped on it. It is:

2A1141385

I know the \"A\" means Synchromesh. What does the \"2\" mean. I have several split cases and none of them have the \"2\" in front of the A.

Thanks.

What side is the ring gear on?

I have not spilt open the transaxle, so I can't tell what side the ring gear is on. But I don't think it's a bus transaxle, since the gear housing part number starts with 113 (deluxe beetle?).  It's also the same size and shape as my other beetle splitcase transaxles. I imagine the bus one is bigger.

Apparently, it came out of a European which may have better gear ratio's than the US version.  I am thinking that down the road, if it has better gear ratio's, to swap the gear's into my 58 tranny.

Thanks.

The Bus transmissions up to 1960 were identical to Bug transmissions.  The case used in a Bus will have the same number.

Put the trans in any forward gear and turn the input shaft CW.  Observe the axles.  If they go backwards, it is Bus.  If they go forwards, it is Bug.

European 50s cars got exactly the same gears as we got.  In fact, there was only one set of gears worldwide up until the 60s.
