Clutch Operating Lever
« on: January 28, 2007, 08:49:48 PM »
I am about to install my split case transaxle into my car when I realized that the clutch operating lever is very stiff. In fact when I pull it back, with the assistance of a screw driver through the hole, it does not spring back. The return spring appears to be in good shape and in place. I know that the transaxle came out of a runner and has been sitting for a while. I thought of dousing it with WD40 and then trying to loosen it up that way. But before I do this are there any other suggestions/recomendations?

Thanks.

If you remove the arm on the outside, you should be able to slide the cross shaft to each side exposing the part of the shaft that rides in the bushings of the case.  Then you could sand them with 400 grit to smooth out any roughness or rust.  Then grease it as good as you can and slide it back and forth to work the grease in the bore.
To get the whole shaft out requires you to split the case.

Thanks Bruce!!

I got a chance to work on it today and that did the trick. It operates nice and smoothly now.

Just out of curiousity does the operating shaft get lubricated any other way? Does it get lubricated in it's housing?

Did you see a bronze bushing in the trans case for the cross shaft?

Even the latest shafts only rely on grease on the shaft for lubrication.
