Won't turn off
« on: May 10, 2009, 12:35:57 PM »
Now I got it started( yee ha!), now when I turn the ignition off the motor won't shut down, so I have to go to the back and pull one of the wires off the coil. ]
Any Ideas?
Mark

coil has constant power? easy to mess that up when you have to run a new ignition wire like i did. when i reran mine to a random switched wire my engine shut off when i hit the brakes, hahaha.

I do not think that is the case. i think it is a timming issue and if everything is conected properly and timming is done it should rock.

Sounds like a wiring issue with power source to the coil or maybe a problem with aftermarket tach wiring.

Timming?

I agree. Check the timming with a good timming light. At least you can rule out timming after that. Hopefully your back up and running in no tim. O0

Did you rewire the car?
You did not say what kind of ignition. Stock?
Are you using a MSD or some other kind of capacitve discharge ignition?

MSD box? Voltage back feed from the alt/gen idiot light. A simple diode inline fixes this problem.

That's what I'm thinking Lanny.

Thanks I'll be looking into all these ideas this weekkend. I have re - wired the whole car, so I think it's something to do with that. It has a alternator and a 009 dist. with points.
Thanks for all the help.

Hate to hijack this thread but does that actually work ?  I went with the resistor off of the coil power supply (as described on the msd site) because I was thinking the alt/gen wire has to flow both ways. One way as a ground so the dash light comes on with the key , the other way when the alt/gen charges and turns out the light?   Now I'm wondering. ???

The diode is in line on the idiot light wiring circuit. It absolutely does work, I've done it many times.
Re the original question, it sounds as if you have constant power at the coil +(#15) wire, instead of 'key on' power.
