my 55 vin number is 1-0 839 661 it puts it at feb-mar of 55
that would put yours at oct-nov 54 pan swap? the seats if correct add about 400 to the value.i don't know why you have no semi's pan swap to a 54 with a 56 body? the front where the heat comes out do they have vents on them or just mesh?

good point russ. i never thought of the 'ole pan swap.

so the #on the pan would mean that the pan is a 54.

does the vin# on the metal plate behind the spare tire on the brake fluid reservoir shelf match the # on the pan? or is it different?

the body does not look like a 54 (no semi's/bumper with over-riders).

Ok guys
I checked the # plate behind the spare tire and it matches the # on the floor
also I looked at the floor heater tubes where they dump out at your feet have mesh approx 1/4 inch squares

I guess I got a tough one  to figure hey

Thanks for all the input

yes, more pics.

how about the rear apron? are there exhaust cutouts or not?

the doors. are they ribbed? there would be a "ledge/line" under the window above where the door panel is.

1/4" squares? i thought a 54 was supposed to have round mesh covered holes in the heater channel?

oh yeah. more pics ;)

i did look at the pic but the bottom line is if you had a digital camera and posted specific pics i could tell for sure.i'll list a few things to look for

1 decklid lift it up underneath where the spring is does it form a "V" or is it straight?

2. gas tank completley square? or does it have a big hump in it?gas cap extremly large (100mm)

3. seats should be like i posted no adjusters knob on them.

4. front where the heat comes out roundish holes with mesh in them not slits.

5.ribbed doors (like silas mentioned)

6. batwing steering wheel

7. semaphores

if most of these are present and no semaphores mabey they were filled in?the rear apron to me almost looks like it had exust cutouts but it is banged up pretty good.

You can post the links to the pix on the samba by right clicking on the pic and selecting "properties".
Hi-lite the link and copy it to your clipboard > 'ctrl+c'. Then just paste it into your post here > 'ctrl+v'

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/171828.jpg

That way peeps on dial-up don't have to download the whole 275K pic, when viewing the post.

-=Cheers=-

OOPs, just tried the link and it doesn't work. You have to copy the URL to your clipboard and paste it into your web browser URL bar.
Somehow the Samba blocks links from other web sites, but allows you to access the photos directly from your browser....

wow, the rear apron is extremely mangled, but i can see that it definately has exhaust cutouts.

the rear fenders have later tail lights on them, but they were probably added by a p/o.

take a pic of the inside of the doors and the gas tank.

i'm still thinking it's a 56.

Well I went outside and decided to find out about the semis  and low and behold it had semiphores and they were welded over and filled with lead and covered with a thin layer of plastic filler (bondo).I assume
then painted. There now we know. Thanks for the heads up on the air cleaner Russ and everyone else for all the info. I bought another oval yesterday and it has the missing door handle and side glass I was missing
not sure of the year or Vin # yet as I haven't brought it home yet but it has bullit fenders on it

Anyway Thanks again all
