Chroming Bumpers Etc.
« on: July 26, 2006, 02:40:24 PM »
I've driven by Modern Plating Bumper Exchange off Quebec St. in Vancouver and it looks like it may be closed down.
Are there shops out there recomended for bumper and chrome restoration?
Thanks!

Yeah, Modern had a labor dispute last year and the boss told all the emplyees to f*** off, then shut the place down.
I had Ghia bumpers done at Pacific Plating and was more than happy.

I think Jason must have gotten lucky.
I took all of Rick's car's chrome to Pacific, because I have a friend who's worked there for 15+ years.  I wasn't looking for a deal, just good quality.  Even with the inside connection, most of the parts had to be re-done a second time.  At one point they lost all the parts for both door handles and the rear T handle.  IME, they dropped the ball so many times, there's never a need to go to them again.

The only thing they did right was when they tried to make it right.  They refunded without question, and re-did the chrome without argument.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

It's too bad about Modern just because they're very close to me.  Another thing is all those bumpers on the roof.. I wonder how many VW bumpers are there and what will be done about them.

I guess I'll try superior in Cloverdale then.

Any ideas what sort of cost I could expect for a pair of Ghia bumpers with over riders?  There is some minor dents to remove and the centre section in the back has a minor crease and some rust to repair.

Cheers!

I seem to recall someone locally getting Beetle overrider bumpers rechromed a few years ago for a grand total of around $700.  Ghia bumpers would be more because there are more pieces to rework.  I would say expect $800-$1k.

My 67 bumpers were $700 10 years ago, by Modern. Ghia bumpers will top $1500 these days. The absolute best chroming I've ever seen is by Victoria Plating. Mighty expensive but perfect. They did all of the plating on the 38 Alfa 8C I worked on last year. Check out G-Dogs Porsche seat assemblies on his 67, that's Vic Plating.

They are indeed a thing of beauty.

My Ghia bumpers cost $1250 including collision straightening and nickel/chrome plating. No corrosion repair was necessary.

I had my ghia bumpers done at Dependable plating in Burnaby. Cost around a grand 6 years ago. FLOSSIN deals with them also, and we all now how picky he is! ;)
