does anyone know if you could fit a 16x7 wheel under the rear stock fender of a 74 super without problems (depending on offset of course)? the car' s back end has not been lowered.... yet! What size tire would anyone recommend with this wheel?

Yes, there's plenty of room with the right offset.

Jag has 16x7 Fuchs on the back of his 75 IRS car, Alan U has the same on his 65 swing axle.

I've got 15x8s on my car, with modified trailing arms. If you pick the right offset, you wouldn't need to modify things.

I believe Jag has 205/55/16s on the rear of his car with stock late Beetle 4 bolt drums re-drilled to P5.
For the front, I'd recommend a 195/50/16 or a 195/45/16. I'm not sure on the fit up front. You should look into this further because I think it will be close. Remember, your 74 front susp is different from the 71-73 cars.

with 195s up front I will get a bit of rub on the fenders, I might have to roll the inner lip a bit or raise the strut a notch, trial and error I guess

On my rears I'm currently running TOYO RA-1 drag radials for the street setup. 225/50/16. I wouldn't go more than a 205/55/16 on your setup. Initially I used a set of Dunlop SP8000's (205/55/16) that were a nice sticky tire before I went to a 225/50/16 Yokohama AVS Sport and now a set of used RA-1's.

I have my SP8000 205/55/16's still in my home garage. They still have 5/32 on the tread. Technically 3/32's is the legal limit before you get in trouble with govt vehicle inspections. Probably I'd say theres an easy 2 summer's worth of life in those tires depending on how many km's you drive. Those tires are not hard either. If you need a set for trial basis shoot me an email.

The thing about Jag's yellow beetle is that he has a very low car and the camber in the rear is excessive (negative). That will give more clearance to the fender wells to prevent rubbing. He lives about 5 houses away from me so I can take a look. But as far as trailor arm clearance is concerned he's not rubbing.
