4x130 brakes with 4x130 to 5x205 adaptors
« on: July 17, 2010, 03:11:12 PM »
I just want to know if anyone has had experience doing this.  it seems to me that a lot of the wide 5 kits are very cheap and I've been hearing a lot about rotors warping with the wide 5 disc brake kits.

How safe are these "empi" 4x130 to 5x205 adaptors that CIP sells?  Has anyone run these before?

the wide 5 adapters hit the caliper on the front would need  a 3/8 spacer to clear the caliper. A car I bought a while ago had the adapters and no spacers  the knob I bought it from ground the outside of the caliper down paper thin ,first time I stepped on brakes caliper blew apart

Don't worry about the strenght of those adaptors, they are STEEL.  There are plenty of other adaptors that are die cast aluminum, and they rarely break, so steel would be that much more reliable.

I'm not really worried about breakage, its just that I'm worried the adaptors won't be good enough quality to run without having some sort of wobble or shimmy at high speeds with a front disc brake kit, spacer, adaptor and then the clever 5x205 bolt pattern.

I think I might just shell out the extra and get a good CB or CSP 5x205 disc brake kit.

Regarding axial runout, the only thing that could affect that is a variation in the thickness of the steel plate they start with.  In the steel industry, variations across 205mm would measure in the tenths of a thousanths of an inch.  In other words, virtually impossible with the design.
Radial runout is the only other error that could show up.  Since they are probably done on some kind of CNC machine all in the same setup, the likelyhood of a radial error is also remote.  Maybe Darren D will comment on this since he plays with that type of machine all the time.

I know Darren K ran them for a while when he had fake BRMs.  No troubles.  I think Lanny did too.  I've never heard of anyone finding any problem with those steel adapters.

Whatever you buy, I would recommend staying away from the AC Industries wide 5 kit.  That one piece solid CAST IRON rotor is so massive, it's like adding a flywheel behind your wheels.

The CB kit uses a cast aluminum hub with an iron rotor bolted onto it.  Much less weight.

Thanks for the info guys.

So to properly run this set up I'll have to run a 4x130 disc brake kit, 3/8 spacer, then an adaptor ontop of this and then the wheels.

and a narrowed beam to get your tires back under the front fenders

Not necessarily.
Depends on the offset of the wheels you're going to use.  When Darren switched from Fuchs to Mahle wheels, he took out the narrowed beam and put a stock one in.

I don't know what 5x205 wheels have a mahle type offset, so if I'd want to run a wide 5 wheel I'll probably have to narrow the beam with the above mentioned brake setup.

Do you even know what your wheel's offset is?

Not sure on the offset, but the backspacing on one set of wheels is 3 1/2" on a 5.5" wide wheel and the other wheels have a 3 1/2" back space with a 5" wheel.
