how big can i go: 15in on 3.5in low 64 bus
« on: May 05, 2010, 07:34:43 AM »
Getting my spindles flipped, and have lowered the rear a spline so bus will be 3.5 in lower.

I want to keep the gearing up for the freeway, so what are the tallest tires I can put on either 14in or 15in wheels (haven't decided yet)?

Thanks,
Mark

What gearing do you have now?
Straight axle swap, or still reduction boxes?
How much hp?

Hi Bruce, everything else is stock, otherwise I would have mentioned it in my original post.

I got an answer to the question of what is the tallest tire/wheel combination I can fit to a 3 1/2 dropped bus:

195/75/14

205/65/15

Or thereabouts. . . . ;)

You shouldn't go much taller than stock, you don't have the hp at lower rpms to push that bread loaf at freeway speeds.

My rears I have 215/65/15 BF Goodrich it makes removing the rear wheel tough (you need a bar to unspring a bit to remove)  but once it's on and the bus dropped down they tuck in and don't rub.  They are nice and fat looking.   there is a wheel tire suspension thread on The Samba that you should check out...there are tons of examples.

That was an old post. Since then I have found that in the rear I can just squeeze in 185/60/15 and for the front, 175/55/15. Thanks
