Title: What can make your VW beetle spew a 2 lane wide smoke screen?
Post by: kinggeorge13 on May 26, 2019, 09:22:16 PM
When your poor dented pushrod tube finally starts leaking oil in large quantities when your engine is working harder (accelerating, going uphill, etc) and drops the oil straight onto the exhaust pipe less than 6" from the header where it's nice and super-hot.   Damn.

So I'm gonna try a set of the more expensive higher quality spring-loaded oversized aluminum tubes with the double ring seals.    I see lots and lots and LOTs of debate out there on what to use and what's best and how long they last but I guess we shall see.    Compared to pulling off the headset and the one that is damaged is the most easily accessible so we shall see.  Plus I can do my valve adjustment at the same time since the valve cover is coming off to get that pushrod out.    I see lots of crap ones out there and negativity towards the ones with locknuts instead of springs.   But I'll try a set of the higher end spring-loaded.

I'm going to try the SCAT aluminum ones.  Reasonable price and nice sale on right now for around $74/set.   There are German-made spring-loaded tubes by CSP but wowza they are something like $300 a set.

Installed the Scat pushrod tube as a trial to see how it does before I take on replacing all 8 of them.  Took the opportunity to complete valve adjustments (yes, both sides) while I was at it.  Not a lot of space under there with the heater boxes right there below the valve covers.  Frigging bails could not come all the way down to free up the valve cover because they ran into the heater box.   So I pulled one end out to get the space to remove the valve cover.    Other than that everything went pretty darned good.   Takes some frigging muscle to get that pushrod tube compressed enough to get it into place.   Finished up a tune up and so far no leaks whatsoever from the new tube and so nice to not be laying down a smokescreen that could blot out Fort Langley from the Space Station.
