i think there are differences... maybe just 68-71 are the same, I know my 72 was different

Yes, 68-71, 72 only are completely different, as are splitty ones.

There's new ones if it comes to it: https://www.justkampers.com/211-740-736-56d-bumper-leaf-trays-pair-for-vw-t2-bay-1967-1972.html , the description is janky, but they look like the correct parts in the pics.
You'll need seals too, Wolfsburg west sells good ones.
