So there I was setting off on a long haul drive in my 72 Superbug.. just finished doing up the engine with bigger pots and dual carbs... had 2 weeks to get her tuned and worked in before starting out. Had the back seat, passenger seat and trunk filled to the gills with all my stuff not moved by the movers or myself to the new house in Manitoba.
And then it happened.....
About 10 KM short of Barrie Ontario, about 5 KM into a 2200 KM drive, engine dies.... I coast over to the side of the road, and try cranking it over...... nada....
try again.... not even the starter turning this time, and now the steering wheel is locked WTF!!
So.. ended up getting it towed to a friends place until I can come back and get it sorted out because I HAVE to be in Manitoba in time or I will be AWOL!!
Bought a Jeep, got it insured, crossloaded everything from the Bug and set out in the span of 3 hours! (fastest car purchase of my life)
Went back this summer with the Jeep and a tow bar to drag the Ol' Girl out to Manitoba kicking and screaming if need be. Turns out what happened is under the metal tumbler for the key in the steering colomb is a plastic switch which turns with the key, and it had cracked in half... not letting power to the engine, starter solenoid, and also not allowing the key out or steering wheel to turn.
Anyone have any Idea where I can get another one?
Thanks in advance!
