More pic

beauty!!
-
A Euro, Nice! Can't wait to see it in person.
-
hope your gonna slam it , very nice oval !
-
Oh ya, it's getting the treatment but I need to do an out of province inspection first before the narrowed beam and stuff goes in it. I'm working on getting rid of the salmon red color to get down to the original ultra marron. Hey Brian it's an early 55 so it came with eggs and semaphores so its not really a euro model. In mid 55 the went with snowflakes and bullets. This is a rare model made for only 6 months. Kind of special like a 67. It's got the original seat material underneath those blue seat covers but until I pass the inspection I don't want to look in case they are torn. It has not been hit other than a little fender bump here and there and the original foors and no rust. It's a very solid project and it will make a nice driver. I just have to see how the pinkish paint comes off to run it as patina...

Hmmm, I don't know about that. I thought Canadian cars went directly to egg lights in the 55 model year, bullets and no semaphores. I read semaphores went through to the 60's in europe. I only know because I had an early Canadian delivered 55, it had eggs and no semaphores, ribbed doors and single tip exhaust pipe. I'd still say it's a euro. Got a birth certificate?
-
It's Pink and its an Oval, looks perfect to me. Good score.
-
That is really cool. Super interesting one
-
Post it on the samba I dare ya...haha dont bother! Super odd ball 55s are for sure! Cool car stoked to see what it ends up lookin like!
-
interesting/confusing time for tail lights & turn signals fo sho!
if it's all og, it looks like geoffs egg & semi oval could be either a us, canada or guam delivered car…
**All 1954-1955 European Beetles were outfited with "heart" taillights.
**All Oct'54 (chassis # 1-0722915) - Mar'55 U.S., Guam, and Canadian market cars used the red convex plastic lens taillights. All of these cars had semaphore directional indicators.
**April'55 - May 2, 1955 (chassis # 1-0871206) U.S., Guam, and Canadian market cars, there are two possibilities. Your car could have the red convex plastic lens taillights and semaphores, or it could have the optional flashing turn signal package with the larger glass taillights and "bullet" style front flashing directional indicators.
**May 3, 1955 (chassis # 1-0871207) - July'55 (chassis # 1-0929746) U.S., Guam, and Canadian market cars were equipped with the flashing indicator package as standard equipment. So, this car would have the larger glass taillights and "bullet" style front directional indicators.

Thanks Silas for posting what I was going to have to explain. This pinkish oval I was made in Dec 54. Im trying to strip the coral red color off using easy off and steel wool to get to the original maroon color like on the dash. I have found that the original paint is very thin. Is this normal?
-
Ya oe paint can be quite thin especially if they did any prep before respray. Early metalics didnt fair very well either..
What is the upholstry under those smurf covers?
-
The upholstery under the seat covers are the original ones plus even under the door panels but until the vehicle inspection is done I don't want to remove them in case they are ripped or holed.
-
fabric or the red Vinyl? My old 55 had fabric and was sweet! I guess being the deluxe? Not sure if the standards had vinyl? Need the time travel machine to go back and see these things in the showroom! ;)
-
Paint that thing...nice find Geoff!! u be catching up to Johnny soon ;)
-
yes the seat are a beige coudoray type fabric. Hey bill I need to learn from you how to strip paint like a pro.
-
It isn't as easy as they say is it Geoff?

I think your car is a 54. vw didn't change to the build date/model year thing until aug '55 (example...aug '55 built vw = '56 model year)(dec '54 built vw = '54 model year).
you've cross referenced your vin with the vin charts, correct? built before vin 1-0781 884 = '54!

true story... which makes it even weirder with the over riders and eggs.....mines only a month older...a january 55
-
The vin is 1-0787 788 and I don't think the bumpers are original.
-
The color ultra maroon was only available till Feb 55
-
The vin is 1-0787 788...
built early january 1955 = 1955 model!
cool! I wonder how close your vin is to josh's vin?
-
I tried removing that pink paint today using only water and 0000 steel wool and it still took off the original paint. I don't think I can run this one as a patina any more. :smiley_confused1: (http://:smiley_confused1:)
-
Hey Geoff just a shot in the dark but what about a heavy cut compound polish and polisher at low speed like 1000-1200 rpm and have a water bottle on hand to keep the heat down. what else have you got to lose? give me a call if you need a hand getting started. my polisher shit the bed but I have everything else your gonna need to try it.
-
Thanks Randy for the tip. I hope you didnt buy that polisher at kms. lol..
-
More pics of the original paint under the coral red.
-
I'm happy to get to the original paint as at first I was getting to the original primer so easily. Here is a pic of the heater channel. No rust.. It's sweet
-
Looks like I'm going Patina now,,, .. :cool2:
-
I'm using 0000 steel wool and acetone and using less pressure. The red paint is coming off better now and I'm not burning thru.
-
The vin is 1-0787 788...

cool! I wonder how close your vin is to josh's vin?
Mine is -1- 0822904 which I think translates into the last day or 2 of January 55?
That looks like a super solid car man, look forward to seeing it I hope!
-
Thanks Josh, I can't believe how much work and time you have put into your 55 rag. It looks great but I feel that if I did all that work I would be pissed if something were to happen to my paint job after its done. I feel that going patina right now is a lot less stressful.

I feel ya....cant say ill be doing the show car thing again anytime soon....next project will be a roach with og paint!
-
That's a beauty for sure , great score and the patina ur creating very carefully is going to just make that car pop :) congrats
-
Whoa! Very cool!
Where did you find a solid early car like this? down south I'm assuming?
Looks great!
-
The car was located in Vernon, BC when I bought it but had come from Winnipeg. It must of been some where in a small town that didnt salt the roads or maybe they didnt drive it in the winter cause it wouldnt start...lol It doesnt have a gas heater so I dont know how anyone could drive a car like that in the brutal praries.
-
Making progress now. Pan off work begins.
-
twisted
-
Hey thanks Brian. I dont know why when I post pictures from my ipad they show up twisted. How did you fix them?
-
just in windows viewer, they've got a rotate. I downloaded, then uploaded! ;)
-
Little late to the paint removal part of the build but just in case..... When I was removing the paint off my 15 I used a product called "goof off". It's a graffiti remover and worked really well for the more delicate areas. Comes in an aerosol can. You'll also get different results in working times with easy off depending on the temperature. I had the best working time when the weather was cold. Slowed the process down considerably.
-
This car is virtually identical to my first vw. 55 deluxe with semaphores. Bought it in Feb. 1968 at Westminster VW on Columbia St. $600. No gas heater but you got gassed when the heat was on !! Had nothing but motorcycles up to that point so driving around in the dry when it was raining was great even if the heater did stink a bit.
-
Well it's starting to snow but I still keep going. I have portable heat but since I have so much work to do, if I were to wait until every condition were completed you end up not getting things done.
-
Another pic

Pan is degreased and waiting for sandblasting or bit of repair first. Those pile of fenders and door is what I need to start stripping the paint a on flat surface. Pulling the pan apart and cleaning was a crappy job but needed to be done. No such thing as a bad job to do on something we really enjoy working on.
-
After I get that pink paint (coral red) off, sorry Randy I know that's your favourite colour, I will temp hang the parts and look back and see if it works.
-
Awesome :)
-
Hahaha you are making a huge mistake taking that sweet paint off your car dude. good to see you banging this ride out fast for spring.
-
When my neighbours started calling the car " Pinky" I knew that the paint has to come off!
-
Well scruffy is back after a bit of time spent redoing the shop and building a 59 fjord blue beetle last year
-
The shop
-
The pan prepped for sandblasting
-
Another angle of the pan. It's all original and in good shape.
-
I redid the shop this spring and added a mezzanine to store VW parts.
-
nice, looking good geoff!
-
Thanks Silas. Here I am taking inventory on building an engine
-
Block and crank
-
Modified an engine stand. I can sit down and work on it...
-
Here is some suspension stuff to go on the pan after paint.
-
Nice stockpile geoff! What size motor again?
-
Thanks Josh. Here are some of the specs
2332
DPR crank
Mahle p/c
CB race rods
Gene berg heads
Berg header
A1 muffler
Berg 1.4 rockers
Berg deep sump
Itailian IDA's
Skat track manifolds
Msd ignition
Jaycee pushrods
Fk10 cam
CB 28mm lifters
Straight cut gears
Full flow with Berg system one filter
Total seal rings
This engine should do well
-
Found out yesterday that my guy to do the sandblasting is booked solid and I can't get it done for about 2 weeks now. I also went thru my inventory for the engine and found I needed some more stuff. Cip is sold out on certain things so I'm going to have to put an order in from the states. I'm planning a trip to Sacro with the boys in a couple weeks and Gordo and I are going to the Classic show in June so I might pick up some stuff there also. I want to run a 36hp fan shrowd but I have a Berg linkage and so I hope to get a different style like a csp or a new Jay Cee model.
-
Is the 36/berg set up a personal thing, or does it not work together?
-

That combo sounds very familiar! Only thing diff with my motor is CE heads, FK46 cam and 51.5 carbs! She's gonna rip man, I love my 2332!! I have the Jacee linkage its in my opinion the nicest linkage out there.....so smooth and stealth!
-
I went on Samba and looked at what people were running for linkage for either the doghouse or the 36hp shroud and I noticed a lot of berg/36hp . But I don't want the bulky doghouse with heater outlets due to access to the 48 Ida's and I have a scat 36hp with a doghouse cooler anyways. I'm going to put the berg linkage on the single cab motor down the road and pick up a Jaycee linkage when I'm down in California. When you do the research you will find that the internal vanes in either cooling styles are the same. But you just can't block the outlets of a heater style because that will cause airflow disturbance. You will still need to add a relieve hole or cut and modify the heater outlets. So what do you really gain??? What is very important is the attaching cooling tin that rides underneath like the sleds and such.
-
I decided to flip the pan and start cleaning it up myself. I am only going to show major steps in this section of the forum. If you want to see the other building progress then you will have to check out the other build sections such as
Scruffy's engine
Scruffy's bodywork
Scruffy's suspension and brakes.
If you don't see it then I haven't got there yet...
