I have a D/P 1600 motor with the distributor spun 180 deg the wrong way(#1 mark is facing fan shroud). It works but I would like to set it up properly. How do I change it ?
Many thanks,
Mark.

set #1 to TDC pull the dist look at the dist drive gear jam a pencil into the hole that the spring is in (remove spring first)
pull up on the pencil while rotating it CCW it should come up to the top of the oil hole  rotate it 180 deg and reinstall  the slot should be aprox 90 deg to the split case marks when done
Re install the dist  and should be good to go

This is what you need to rotate 180 deg

ps     Use a unsharpened pencil and taper it just a bit tap in in with a hammer and it should move

Better than that, I suggest you install it in the orientation VW specifies.  That way if you swap in a distributor that was timed on another engine, it will at least run right away.

Turn the engine over to TDC of #1.  Remove the drive gear and re-install it so that the slot is parallel to the pulley face, and offset to the rear of the car.
